Title: Neural correlates of depression: molecular mechanisms of plasticity of limbic structures in the mouse model.
Abstract: Disorders of the central serotonin-(5HT-)system are among the fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms of depression.  In this context, the genetic variability of the 5HT-transporters (5HTT) is an important risk factor for both the development of emotional disorders and depression. The aim of this project is to clarify the molecular mechanisms of the structural and electrophysiological changes in neurons of the limbic system in 5htt-deficient mice. We will focus in particular on neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, and the amygdala. Correlation of the structural and functional changes at the neuronal level shall help in developing a hypothesis of the pathophysiological principle of depression. Besides this specific goal, we aim to establish a platform for modern techniques of cellular neurophysiology for collaborations with other groups within the IZKF and for the research in the clinic.
