  • Format: Lengthy exploration of a topic Single or joint authorship; edited volumes (comprising a number of authored chapters). Length varies around 200 pages.
  • Main target audiences: researchers; policy makers; practitioners. 
  • Publishers: universities; national and international adult education organisations; academic publishers. 
  • Cost: varies greatly depending on publisher and whether book is produced in hardback, paperback or e-version. Distribution: hard copy and e-versions. 
  • Editorial control and quality assurance: emphasis on selection for quality of book proposal. Oversight by Editorial Boards comprising leading scholars in the field; independent peer review processes.  
  • Language: First language of country in which published. Many books aimed at an international readership tend to be published (also) in English.
